Friday, April 3rd

WELCOME BACK!

Thank you for your patience as we are working through some necessary planning in preparation to
resume structured learning opportunities for your child. We are working hard to better understand the
technology and how it can best serve your child's learning.

The grade five team will be posting a plan on their classroom blog every Friday. Each week’s plan will
include information about the activities and tasks to be completed by 9:00 am the following Friday.
Posting the plans on Fridays will give students and their parents the opportunity to plan the week
ahead in a way that best suits their current learning environment as we understand that students may
need to share resources such as computer access with siblings or their parents. Based on the
guidelines given to us, there is an expectation that students in grade five will be completing five hours
of schoolwork per week which will be split evenly between Maths, ELA and FLA at this time.

The grade five team will be offering weekly student tutorial times through Google Meet. The table
below shows a schedule of when students can connect with specific subject teachers for help.
On the schedule, you may notice a new name; Mme Monique. She is a teacher connected to David
Thompson who will be helping to support teachers and students in this adventure into online learning.
She will have a weekly tutorial time where she can support students in any subject area with help to
read assignments, help to break down assignments into smaller pieces or just general help with the
workload. As we are still figuring out the best way to approach this new endeavour, it is possible that
the schedule could change. We will be sure to communicate any changes through the blog. These
tutorial sessions are intended for students to reach out to get help from their teachers.  We would ask
parents to reach out via email. We will be checking our emails during the regular school hours:
8:00-2:30, Monday to Friday, and will make every attempt to respond in a reasonable time frame.

Student instructions to access Google Meet.

  1. Go to Google Meet homepage: https://meet.google.com/
  2. Make sure you are connected to your educbe account in the top right corner.
  3. Click on: Use a meeting code
  4. Enter the meeting code for that session found in the right hand column of the schedule.

  • You will only be able to access the meeting if your teacher is already in the session. If
you enter the meeting code before the teacher has logged on, you will receive a message telling
you that you’re not allowed to start a meeting.  Wait a minute or two and then try again.

Google Classroom
Many teachers are choosing to use Google Classroom as a tool to teach and learn from home. Here is a resource for parents to help you navigate Google Classroom.

MATH
The code to access my google classroom is: p5b2on4
The code for the weekly tutorial on Google Meet is: mmerichardgr5
I will be there every Monday at 10am if you need help with your Math and to answer your questions. I would be happy to see everyone at our first meeting on April 6th, even if you don't have any question. I will open the meeting at 9:45 to give you time to log in. Use your educbe google account to log in. I'm looking forward to see you all very soon!
Here is the digital version of the textbook for those of you who left it at school.
Check Google Classroom for the answers of the work you completed this week and for the lessons and work for next week.

ELA

Google Classroom: "ELA 5-1" Classroom Code: qucdxzd

Students will eventually be writing a short story, but for this week I want them to review plot structure and literary elements with the assignment on the ELA Google Classroom.

Google Meet tutorial time: Tuesday 1:00-2:00 Code: leavittela5

FLA

This week, you had time to understand the new platform that we will use, work on La créature du marais Chapter 4 & 8 and log in Google classroom with this code : ubhdaks. Next week, you'll be finishing chapter 8. Make sure you watch the video I posted and read the rubric before you deposit your presentation on Google Classroom on Friday, April 10th.

Our tutorial session on Google Meet will be on Wednesday at 11:00am and the code is : turcotte-grade5

Social Studies
Reminder to hand in your Social Studies comparison
Students can share with me their comparison of the point of view of the people from Nunavut and Calgary that they worked in class (Instructions and Rubric).  They can share it with me at this address: vipoliquin@educbe.ca

Make sure to write your name on the copy.

I will be working with Madame Turcotte to hand in Social Studies assignments.  Those assignments will evaluate not only Social Studies stems but also FLA ones.  I will not add to the workload, just integrate it as projects through your FLA Google Classroom. So, yes, your big project in Social Studies is still happening, but there will be a few modifications.  Stay tuned.

I am available on Google Meet Thursday from 10:00 to 10:30 if you have any questions.  My code is mmevickygr5.

A message from Student Services (Mme Plante)

Dear DTS students,

Wow, this is quite a change! I would love to hear from you. I want to know how you are doing. Whether it’s to give me a quick update or to have a conversation, I want you to know, I am here to support you. We can communicate by email.  This is for all students; this is a safe space where you can talk and express yourself. I will do my best to support you in any way I can. maplante@cbe.ab.ca
