December 16-19

FLA
This week in FLA we finished our noun quiz and we watched the movie Pour toujours, les Canadiens. During the viewing, students had comprehension questions to answer (marks on PowerSchool). After the break, we will start working on the sentence structure and how to bring our writing from basic sentences to good sentences. We will also continue reading Le Petit Prince.

Social Studies
We continued taking notes about the Canadian Shields and will finish this unit after the Holidays.

ELA
Students viewed the movie version of Bridge to Terabithia and discussed the differences from the book and evaluated whether the differences impacted the story or not.  Students that did not hand in their final project, need to complete it over the holidays.

Math
Thank you all for the wishes, cards and Christmas presents. I wish everyone a nice and relaxing Holiday. After the break, we will work in stations to review our multiplication and division unit. There will be a unit test during the week of January 13.

December 1-6

Dear Parents,
Please note that we now have a coat rack for the students in 5-1 in the hallway just outside of their lockers. They can leave their winter gear and boots if there is no room in their locker. The hallway is supervised during nutrition break and lunch time, however there is no active supervision during class time. If you give you child the permission to leave their clothes on the rack, please remind them to never leave any valuables in their pockets. Thank you!

Science:
We had the chance to have meteorologist Jordan Witzel from Global come and speak to our students on Tuesday afternoon. We learned about how to forecast weather and about climate change. Thank you for your time Mr. Witzel!

Scholastics will be coming home on Monday. Those of you who want to make a purchase have to do it through scholastic.ca/canadaclubs
Parents pick a free book (worth $7 or less) when you spend $30 or more online. Coupon Code: CLIFFORD.

Thank you,
Mme Richard

ELA:
Students have started their final project for Bridge to Terabithia.  We will work on it till Wednesday and watch the movie Thursday and Friday.  Students that are not done project by Thursday, will have to complete it while watching the movie.

Math
Every Thursday at lunch, I am offering tutoring in Math with the help of 4 grade 8 students. I make small groups of grade 5 students based on their needs and they are paired with a grade 8 student. Every week, the groups stay the same. This allows for relationship building between the grade 5s and their tutors. I plan the activities and I closely supervise the work being done. I already have 8 students who committed to joining the tutoring group every Thursday until Christmas.
If you (and your child) are interested in joining this tutoring group, please let me know. I ask that students commit for a minimum of 4 weeks.

The homework this week is on long division. It may be a bit longer than usual, especially the question #2 where students also have to multiply to check their answers. Therefore, it will exceptionally be due on Monday, December 16th. This will be the last homework before the Holidays.
Thank you,
Mme Richard

They will also have to write basic sentences with nouns in them and identify them. Over the weekend, they have to complete pages 1 to 4 in this document. Pages 1-3 should be done as we corrected them in class.

The song next week is Alors on danse de Stromae and the lyrics are here.

Next week, we will continue to work on the noun to be ready for our quiz on Thursday. We won't go to the library that week,. We will wait the week before Winter Break, so they all have a French book to bring home during the break.
